2010 WVC Champ.

WVC Championships @ UW-Whitewater

UWW hosted the conference tournament for the 2nd time over the 19 year history of the WVC.  The host Warhawks were pooled with the top seeded Titans (UW-Oshkosh), fifth seed Golden Eagles (Marquette) and the eighth seeded Pioneers (UW-Platteville).  UWW went 1-1 on Friday, defeating UW-Platteville and dropping a match to UW-Oshkosh.  Saturday morning the Warhawks came out strong and defeated Marquette in two.  In first round tournament play, UWW faced UW-Stout.  UWW continued their strong play as they defeated the Blue Devils in two.  In the semi-finals the Warhawks faced #9 Lakeland, who UWW had defeated earlier in the week.  After dropping the first set, the Warhawks battled back and took the second set.  Even though UWW came out fast and strong in the third set winning the switch point, the Warhawks then gave up a 1-9 run as the Muskies finished the match 15-9.  #9 Lakeland went on to defeat #4 UW-Oshkosh in an exciting 3-game WVC Championship match.

@ Lakeland (3/9)

The Warhawks showed the Muskies that they would not lay down at the end of the season.  UWW started out strong taking the first two sets 26-24, 28-26.  Hitting errors plagued the Warhawks as they fought, but eventually lost the next two sets 19-25, 23-25.  The fifth and deciding set was all Whitewater.  The Warhawks took the set 15-11.  This is the first time UWW has beat Lakeland College in conference play in four years.  This puts the Warhawks in a good position for the upcoming WVC Conference Tournament hosted by UW-Whitewater.

University of Iowa Tournament (3/6-3/7)

UW-Whitewater came to the tournament ranked as the second place team.  After the first part of pool play, the Warhawks were perfect going 6-0 in sets.  In the power pool that afternoon, UWW was paired up with host Iowa.  In two exciting sets, the Warhawks kept rolling as they beat the Hawkeyes in two.  For the last match of the day, UWW faced College of Dupage.  With the first set going into extra points, UWW finally took the set 29-27.  After losing the second set 16-25, Whitewater came back winning the third and final set.  Sunday morning came early for the #1 seeded Warhawks, but after defeating Providence in two sets, UWW next had UW-Oshkosh II.  With a poor performance, the Warhawks were able to push the match to three games, but fell short in the end.  Mizzou beat UW-Oshkosh II in the championship.

UW-Oshkosh (3/3)

Both teams came ready play on Wednesday night.  With the Titans leading the conference (9-0) the Warhawks were looking to add a blemish to their record.  With the match televised on Warhawk TV, the hawks wanted to put on a show, and they did.  Whitewater came out fast and took the first set in exciting fashion, winning 29-27.  UW-Oshkosh however did not like that, UW-O came back taking the next two sets.  Life sprang to the Warhawks though as they fought hard and took set four 26-24.  But that life ran out as UW-Oshkosh took the final set in a dominating 15-9 performance.

 Finished T-9th

Lakeland (2.19)

The Muskies came with a broom as they swept the Warhawks at home on Friday.  UWW played strong, but unforced errors plagued the Warhawks once again.  After loosing the first set 30-32, the Warhawks started slow in the second set.  Due to questionable plays at the end of the set, UWW lost 25-27 after being down 20-24.  Seems like UWW spent it all in the those first two sets as Lakeland walked away with the third set 25-17.  The Warhawks were led by the hitting of Mark Haertle as he racked up 17 kills.

@ Oshkosh

The Warhawks came out swinging taking the first set against WVC rival #8 UW-Oshkosh.  But Oshkosh's serving proved to be too much as the Titans took the next set.  UWW made sets three and four interesting, but Oshkosh was too much as UW-O won the match in four sets (21-25, 25-16, 25-22, 26-24).

Marquette (2.12)

The Hawks came out strong taking two of the first three sets on Friday.  UWW put on a show as Derek Walters bounced a ball to complete the second set.  After going back and fourth in game three, the warhawks came around and won the fourth set, winning the match (25-20, 25-23, 20-25, 25-18).

@ Platteville (2/7)

The Warhawks bounced back sweeping UW-Platteville 3-0.  UWW came out strong as they defeated the Pioneers 25-8, 25-10, 25-13.

@ Marquette (2/2)

Both the varsity and junior varsity squads went the distance and fell short at Marquette.  Unforced errors gave too many points away as UWW- I fell to the Golden Eagles in 5, while UWW-II dropped two straight loosing in 3.

January 31st Play Date

UWW had a great weekend up in Sheboygan, WI.  The Warhawks went on to face UW-Stout, UW-Steven's Point, and UW- La Crosse in a divisional cross over play date.  UWW swept UW-S and UW-SP 3-0.  UWW made the match against UW-L a close one with many unforced errors, but ended up taking the deciding set 15-11, winning the match 3-2.

WVC Season Opener 2010:  December 5th @ UW-Oshkosh

Whitewater had a great season opener.  Whitewater went 9-3 in the round robin portion of the tournament taking a 2nd place seed into the playoffs. UWW went against UW-LaCrosse in the semifinals. Having split earlier in the day, both teams went at it in a close match.  In the deciding set however, the hawks took over and won the 3rd set sending them to the championship match (which was later cancelled).

However, in the most unfortunate of events, during the Lakeland v UW-Oshkosh match, sophomore MH Jared Sparrey went down with an injury.  UW-Whitewater and all of the WVC gives the best wishes to Jared, his family, and Lakeland Volleyball.

Nations 2009 in Kansas City

NATIONALS (Apr. 9th-11th)- Whitewater had a great tournament this year.  The first time in years that UWW has finished in the top 16 in the nation.  After a tough pool day one UWW defeated both Notre Dame and Rutgers University in two straight sets.  Due to a reffing mistake, the hawks beat Fresno State the first match 25-0 due to a forfeit!  Then Fresno came back and defeated the hawks in 3.  Taking second in pool play put the Hawks in a challenge round the next morning.

Day 2 the Hawks started off facing UW-Milwaukee for a spot in a 3-team power pool.  UWW beat UW-M in three exciting sets.  This pooled UWW with two #1 seeds:  Michigan State and Utah Valley.  With the Hawks needing only to clinch one match, they put everything they had into Michigan State.  Whitewater came out on top over the Spartans in three high energy sets.  After putting it all into that last match, the hawks came out flat against Utah Valley who defeated the hawks in 2.  All UWW could do was hope that Utah Valley beat Michigan State.  Which they did!  Finishing second in the power pool brought the hawks into GOLD!!

Day 3 began facing Arizona University.  In a close first match the Hawks fell to Arizona.  In a close game 2, New Comer of the Year:  Danny Wittke came down on the opposing team's foot and was out for the game.  With freshman, Rob Kuhnke, on the outside, the hawks battled but eventually fell to the Wildcats, tying for 9th place in the nation.
